FLAME ARMOUR FIRE SHUTTERS CE MARKED BSEN16034 – FLEXIBLE AND RIGID STRUCTURE

The Structure supporting the Flame Armour fire shutter must be a fire-resistant separating element, built in accordance with the appropriate building regulations. The structure must have a fire resistance greater or equivalent to the fire rating of the Flame Armour fire shutter. This supporting structure must be capable of supporting the fire shutter for the required fire resistance period and neither compromise nor be detrimental to the performance of the fire roller shutter.

In conjunction to this, considerations must be contemplated to ensure that the load imposed by the various Flame Armour fire shutters components, such as the angles, guides and canopy does not compromise the structural support. It is recommended, that a critical temperature of 400 0C and steel sections with an Hp/A values below 230m-1 are used for design fire resistant steel support sections.

If the Flame Armour fire shutter is fixed to a masonry supporting elements, the masonry elements must comply and be capable of providing fire resistance in terms of insulation, integrity and load bearing capacity greater or equivalent to the fire resistance, to the tested opening sizes of 2400mm width by 2400mm height. THE FLAME ARMOUR FIRE SHUTTER HAS BEEN TESTED TO BOTH  ‘RIGID’ AND ‘FLEXIBLE’ STRUCTURAL TYPES.

The Flame Armour fire shutter was further tested on the 7th July 2020 to a ‘Flexible’ structural type. Under the current regulations BS EN 16034-1, if the original test specimen is tested to a rigid structure, such as steel or masonry, then an additional test is required for other fixing types. This also applies for fire shutters tested to ‘Flexible’ structural types, these would also require additional testing to manufacture fire shutters to ‘rigid’ structures.

As stated in the Extended Application Report (BS EN 15269-10) on page 34, section J.1.2 the regulation clearly states that rigid to standard flexible structures is “NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT ADDITIONAL TEST”. Therefore, a result of this additional testing is required by all fire shutter manufacturers, SSS Industrial Doors Ltd have therefore further tested the Flame Armour fire shutter so that it can be installed on both flexible and rigid structural types. As it currently stands, there are only two companies within the United Kingdom that have tested and passed to both flexible and rigid structures, one of those companies is SSS Industrial Doors Ltd.
