Why should you clean your roller shutters?
To ensure that your business is protected from external threats for as long as possible, it’s essential that you keep up with roller shutter maintenance. Grime build-up should be kept at bay, as it’s inevitable that your shutters will be exposed to plenty of dust and dirt over the years. Without giving everything a good scrub, you could risk your shutters becoming damaged through scratching, or mechanisms
How to clean roller shutters
How often should you clean your roller shutters?
To make sure that the performance of your shutters aren’t compromised, try to clean them at least three times a year.
What will you need?
Cleaning your roller shutters is a simple process, and you’ll only need a few pieces of equipment to get them looking brand new:
- Soft sponge or cloth
- Soft-bristled brush
- Mild detergent
- A bucket full of warm water
- Hose
Step 1: Brush of dirt and dust
Before you start, leave your roller shutters slightly open, grab your soft-bristled brush and gently brush out the ventilation holes, also making sure to brush away any debris from the surface. Using a soft brush will prevent any scratching, ensuring that your shutters are kept in top condition.
Step 2: Hose your shutters down
Next, hose your shutters down to remove any additional dirt and dust that you may have missed. To prevent any damage, make sure that the water pressure isn’t too high.
Step 3: Cleaning the slats and guides
Tend to the spots that are harder to reach, particularly between your roller shutter’s slats and along the guides with these being the parts most likely to endure grime build-up, using warm, soapy water and a sponge/cloth to do this. Make sure that you use a gentle detergent to protect the enamel surface from damage.
Step 4: Another good scrub
Roll your sleeves up and get ready to give your shutters another good scrub, this time dipping your soft-bristled brush in warm, soapy water. Once you’ve ensured that the roller shutters are now closed this time, wipe them using an up and down motion. Make sure to avoid going side-to-side as this might cause the slats to become misaligned.
Step 5: Hose down again
Hose your roller shutters down once more with clean water to remove any leftover soap, and tough dust and dirt.
Step 6: Dry
Dry everything with a soft, dry cloth, again using an up and down motion rather than side-to-side.
Step 7: Clean between the guides
The final step is to clean between your roller shutter’s guides, this time making sure that it’s completely open beforehand. Use your soft-bristled brush to get rid of any dirt and dust that’s collected inside the guide, cleaning them with a low-pressure hosing. Ensure that the guides are dry before closing your shutters once more.
